Hi,

I’m planning to take the GMAT after 3 months in time for Round 1 of MBA admissions. So my test date would be between last week of August and 1st week of September 2013. I’m also sitting for the LSAT on Oct. 6th, 2013.

I have given the GMAT before and had got 530. I went to the test without any preparation hence it could be considered my diagnostic test score.

A little about myself:

I am a 28 year old guy. Most of my work ex has been selling mutual funds independently. I have a 3 year Bachelor’s degree from Delhi University, India. My grades were average, nothing to brag about. I honestly don’t expect to get into any of the top universities but I feel I need to get a score in the 99th percentile to have a reasonable chance of getting into a Top 25 university.

I hope to do a JD/MBA or JD or MBA. I believe studying for the LSAT simultaneously, will improve my GMAT verbal score as well.

I would like to request people on this forum to help me make a 3 month day by day schedule. Please do not use real dates, just day 1, day 2 and so on. My line of work gives me plenty of free time so I can dedicate lot of it towards studying.

The books that I already own:

A store sells a certain product at a fixed price per unit. At the product’s current price, q units cost a total of exactly $300. If the price were lowered by $5 from its current value, then q + 2n units would cost exactly $300; if the price were raised by $5, then q – n units would cost exactly $300. What is the value of q?

A. 10

B. 15

C. 20

D. 25

E. 30

Need some help to tackle this question.

OA C

We need 3 prices spaced $5 apart that each divide into 300.

Make a list of options:

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…

The prices above imply that the following numbers of units can be purchased:

300/5 = 60.

300/10 = 30.

300/15 = 20.

300/20 = 15.

300/25 = 12.

300/30 = 10.

According to the problem, the numbers of units that can be purchased are — in ascending order — q-n, q, and q+2n.

The difference between the greatest number and the median number (2n) is TWICE the difference between the median number and the least number (n).

Only the values in red satisfy this constraint:

30-20 = 10.

20-15 = 5.

Thus, the value of q — the median number of units that can be purchased — is 20.

The correct answer is C.

Verbal tends to be much harder to improve than quant; I wouldn’t expect any sort of quantum leap in 10 days. That said, the best thing you could probably do at this point is go through a heap of official SC questions and annotate them as thoroughly as you can:

(1) Highlight all the seemingly meaningful differences between answer choices (e.g. “eat” vs “eats”; “like” vs “such as”; “not only … but also” vs “not only … but”). This will help you recognize the choices offered by each answer.

(2) Note WHY each incorrect choice is incorrect, being sure to use GMAC‘s reasoning, as provided in their official explanations: SC can be somewhat arbitrary, so we want the arbiter’s justification for each decision. Further note which differences were actually meaningful.

(2) Try to find patterns in the questions so that you can easily identify meaningful differences and correct choices in future questions.
